Job Description Summary

This is a full-time position within the Division of Physician Assistant Studies. Primary responsibilities include providing leadership in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the PAS clinical education program. The Clinical Coordinator of Operations works with the PAS Program Director, Medical Director, Director of Clinical Education, and Coordinator for Clinical Education and Simulation, to ensure excellence in all of the students’ clinical educational experiences.

Job Description

The individual responsibilities of the faculty for the Division of Physician Assistant Studies will be assigned by the PAS Program Director with input from the Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences and the Dean of the College of Health Professions. The overarching goal of each faculty member is to support the Program by providing experienced, knowledgeable guidance for the planning, implementation, and development of the program’s instructional curriculum. Each faculty member will provide regular, competent instruction, working to provide the best educational opportunities for the PAS students. Faculty members will also consult regularly with the Program Director and other program faculty to ensure that all ARC-PA standards are fully met.

Reporting:

The Clinical Coordinator for Operations reports to the PAS Program Director. Performance evaluations will be conducted by the Program Director with input from the Department Chair and College Dean.

PAS Principal Faculty Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as instructor in the PAS program in areas of clinical and/or professional expertise.
  • Must manage and evaluate course assessment for courses directed.
  • Serve as an academic advisor.
  • Participate in recruiting and retention of students.
  • Provide input to assist with ongoing program assessment and improvement.
  • Participate in the program’s admissions process including application review, candidate interviews, and selection meetings.
  • Participate in the accreditation process as assigned by the program director.
  • Continually evaluate and suggest programmatic or policy changes where appropriate (including mission statement, program goals, and learning objectives).
  • Attend Division, College of Health Professions, and University-wide meetings as necessary.
  • Participate in program-sponsored activities including White Coat and Graduation ceremonies.
  • Perform other duties deemed necessary by the Division Director, Department Chair, or Dean of the College of Health Professions.

Clinical Coordinator for Operations Principal Duties:

Provide operational oversight for the day-to-day operation of the clinical phase of the PAS curriculum.

  • Serve on the Clinical Curriculum Committee together with the Program Director, Director of Clinical Education, and the Coordinator of Clinical Education and Simulation.
  • Provide regular updates and reports from the Clinical Curriculum Committee to the Program Director.
  • Communicate effectively with students in their clinical year regarding any issues that arise with their clinical sites.
  • Provide clinical education orientation to students.
  • Conduct student clinical site visits.
  • Assure clinical education sites provide the physical, interprofessional, and educational experiences necessary to meet program’s clinical educational goals as defined by the ARC-PA.
  • Provide and educate preceptors on the clinical year syllabi, rotation-specific learning objectives, clinical year preceptor handbook, methods of student evaluation, and fundamentals of precepting PA students.
  • Support the Coordinator of Clinical Education and Simulation in reviewing and evaluating student’s evaluations of the preceptor(s).
  • Support the Coordinator of Clinical Education and Simulation in reviewing and evaluating student’s evaluations of clinical sites.
  • Support the Coordinator of Clinical Education and Simulation in providing high-quality student educational experiences at each rotation callback.
  • Conduct preceptor remediation when appropriate and report preceptor remediation to the Program Director and program faculty.
  • With input from the Coordinator of Clinical Education and Simulation and the Director of Clinical Education, update and maintain the clinical year student and preceptor handbooks.
  • With input from the Coordinator of Clinical Education and Simulation and the Director of Clinical Education, update and maintain the clinical rotation learning objectives, ensuring clarity and adherence to the PAS vision, mission, values, and learning goals.
  • Maintain preceptor tracking and remediation spreadsheets.

Provide support to the Director of Clinical Education regarding recruitment oversight for the clinical phase of the PAS curriculum.

  • Support the Director of Clinical Education in preceptor recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Support the Director of Clinical Education in making timely clinical education assignments to PAS students throughout the clinical phase of education.
  • Support the Director of Clinical Education and provide input concerning clinical year adjunct and associate faculty members, including those involved with recruitment or site visits.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s or doctoral degree in physician assistant studies or a related discipline. A degree in PAS is not required;

2 years clinical experience or related professional experience;

Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills;

Certification in area of professional expertise; if applicable

Eligible for licensure in the state of South Carolina, if applicable;

Strong commitment to achieve the missions of the PAS Division, the College of Health Professions, and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).
